ATMs (cash machines)

Bank customers can carry out certain transactions at ATMs (automated teller machines) using a card or a savings book.

To use an ATM you need to have a charge, credit or debit card, or, for some transactions, a savings book. A secret number, known as a PIN (personal identification number), is also required.

ATMs are very popular as they are easy to use, available 24 hours a day and readily accessible. You can find them not only at banks, but also in shopping centres, offices, airports, etc.

The following are some of the transactions you can carry out at ATMs:

  • Cash withdrawals
  • Paying Cash or cheque deposits into your bank account
  • Checking the balance and transactions on your accounts.
  • Paying bills
  • Bank transfers
  • Topping up credit on your mobile phone
  • Purchasing tickets for events

Bank fees may be charged when using an ATM, especially if the ATM belongs to a different bank to the one that issues your card.

When withdrawing cash from an ATM, the bank must inform you whether a fee will be charged or not, giving you the option to cancel the transaction.
