Basic features

Payment cards are payment instruments issued by a financial institution or retailer that allow payments to be made without cash.

Payment cards must comply with certain standards:

  • The front of the card must include the name of the issuing financial institution, the logo of the interbank network (e.g. VISA, MASTERCARD or EURO 6000), the chip, the card number, the expiry date and the cardholder’s name.
  • The back of the card must have a magnetic strip, a space for the cardholder´s signature, the card verification value (CVV), and a hologram. 
  • Virtual cards can be issued for online payments, without the need for a physical card.
