In this 9th edition of the competition, the number of participating students has increased 56% compared with last year. A total of 3,975 Spanish higher secondary education and intermediate vocational training students have signed up for the competition, organised by the European Central Bank (ECB) and the national central banks of Spain, Germany, Austria, Belgium, France, Slovakia, Slovenia, Finland, Italy, Luxembourg and Portugal.

The first round of the competition, in which the teams answered 30 test questions on monetary policy, has finished. The 100 qualifying teams now have until 22 January to submit a written analysis of the interest rate decision that they believe the ECB Governing Council should make at its meeting on 23 January 2020.
