International Education Day

Today, 24 January, is the International Day of Education, created by the United Nations General Assembly to celebrate the importance of education worldwide.
The slogan for this fifth International Day of Education is “Invest in People, Prioritize Education”.
The Banco de España is committed to education and undertakes a variety of initiatives aimed at improving economic and financial literacy among the general public. This blog post describes some of the educational projects we have been running for a number of years.
- Our Schools Programme and Financial Literacy Competition
The Banco de España runs the Financial Education Programme in the context of the Financial Education Plan. The programme provides a range of resources and activities enabling teachers to explore the PISA areas of financial literacy with their pupils: money and transactions, planning and managing finances, risk and reward, and the financial landscape.
The programme is mainly targeted at pupils in the last four years of secondary education or in vocational training, but teachers can also adapt the material for pupils at other levels.
All schools that join the programme can take part in the Financial Literacy Competition, a multiple-choice quiz on topics related to the economy and finance. There are two qualifying rounds, the first taking place online and the second in person.
More than 350 schools – almost 12,000 pupils – took part in the programme in 2022.

If you are a teacher in secondary education or vocational training, there is still time to register your school for the latest edition. You can do so by completing the registration form on the “Finanzas Para Todos” website by 28 April 2023.

- Generation €uro Students’ Award
The Generation €uro Students’ Award is a joint initiative by the European Central Bank and 12 Eurosystem central banks, including the Banco de España. It is aimed at students who are in the last two years of secondary education or intermediate vocational training and who are keen to learn more about how monetary policy works in the euro area and how it relates to the economy as a whole.
Teams of students are put to the test in three rounds, which involve an online quiz, a written exercise and a presentation on monetary policy before a jury.
The teachers of teams that qualify for the second round are invited to a training day with Banco de España experts at our headquarters in Madrid.
Some 2,000 students have taken part in the 12th edition of the competition, which is currently under way.
The registration period has now closed. Registration for the next edition will open in the last quarter of 2023.
