Going on holiday? Don’t forget to keep an eye on your money
14/07/2026
As you get ready for your holiday, take a moment to add a few quick banking checks to your to-do list. They may not be the most exciting part of the preparations, but most are straightforward and can help make sure that nothing stops you from enjoying your holiday. Before you go:
- Check the expiry date on any cards you plan to take with you. Banks usually send replacements well in advance, but don’t risk being stuck with an expired card while you’re away.
- Set up your cards on your phone through your bank’s app. It’s a handy way to pay while you’re out and about, since we rarely go anywhere without our phones.
- Online banking and mobile apps make managing your money easy while you’re on holiday. Check your access codes and that they work properly. If you lose your card, many banks’ apps let you freeze it from your phone, without needing to contact them.
- If you’re going to use your cards to withdraw cash or pay abroad, check your bank’s terms and conditions for these services before you go, as you may need to look for a product better suited to your needs.
- If you’re thinking about financing any purchases, check the terms and conditions so that you can decide which option is best for you.
- And, obvious as it may sound, make sure there’s enough money in your account. Check your account activity and watch out for any unauthorised charges.
Holidays are a chance to switch off from your daily routine, including banking admin. But spending a few minutes each day keeping an eye on your finances will give you peace of mind so that you can enjoy your break and avoid unwelcome surprises later.
