Help us choose the theme for new euro banknotes.
11/07/2023
All central banks regularly update their banknotes to make counterfeiting more difficult. The first euro banknotes were introduced over 20 years ago and the second series entered circulation in 2013. The Eurosystem is currently working on designing a new series of banknotes. This represents an opportunity to make them more attractive, recognisable and inclusive for all Europeans.
At the beginning of 2022, citizens from across the euro area shared their thoughts on potential themes for the main image of the new banknotes. A group of specialists drawn from various fields, including history, natural and social sciences, graphic arts and technology, presented a list of selected themes to the Governing Council of the European Central Bank (ECB):
- Birds: resilient and evocative
- European culture
- European values mirrored in nature
- The future is yours
- Hands: together we build Europe
- Our Europe, ourselves
- Rivers: the waters of life in Europe
The Governing Council has picked these seven themes for the shortlist. Make your voice heard and pick your preferred designs by 31 August.
