Has your DNI card been lost or stolen? Notify your bank without delay and report it.

10/08/2021

Your National Identity Card (DNI) is your official identity document. It serves to prove your nationality and all of the personal information that it contains. You will have to show your DNI to conduct most financial transactions, such as opening a bank account or applying for a loan.

The theft or loss of your DNI is more important than you think. Anyone in possession of your DNI could commit identity fraud and attempt to conduct transactions while claiming to be you.

It doesn’t happen very often, but if your bank fails to spot that someone else is attempting to perform transactions using your lost or stolen DNI, you could be in for a nasty surprise. For example, your account could be emptied out or you might find a loan or card in your name that you did not apply for.

Therefore, if your DNI is stolen it is imperative that you file a police report without delay at any National Police station or Civil Guard headquarters. The National Police should also be notified if you accidentally lose your DNI, even if you don’t file a report.

We recommend that you keep a copy of the police report or notification in a safe place. That way you won’t be liable for any transactions conducted in your name by fraudsters, but you may find it difficult to prove such fraud if you have no evidence of the theft or loss of your DNI.
