A new step towards the digital euro

The Eurosystem has successfully completed the digital euro preparation phase, which began in November 2023. A new phase is now beginning, centred on technical readiness. If the European regulation is approved in 2026, a pilot programme could be launched as early as in 2027, with the Eurosystem possibly ready for a first issuance of the digital euro in 2029.

This project aims to offer a public digital payment method complementing cash, while ensuring simplicity, privacy and reliability throughout the euro area.
