“Bluesnarfing”: data theft via Bluetooth

14/11/2023

The Bank Customer Portal pays special attention to the most common frauds that have emerged with the rise of new technologies in finance. In this post we will explore bluesnarfing: the use of a Bluetooth connection to access the victim’s device and steal bank and personal data.

Most smartphones can connect via Bluetooth to other devices such as other phones, smartwatches, headphones, TVs and more.

To establish a connection, the devices must be close to one another and have their Bluetooth enabled. As a security measure, your phone will typically ask for authorisation before connecting.

But this is not always the case. Cyber criminals use specialised software, allowing them to connect to your device and access your data. They can then steal sensitive information such as passwords, supplant your identity and even make bank transfers or online purchases if they manage to access your bank data.

How can you protect yourself from this type of fraud?

  • Turn off Bluetooth when you’re not using it. This is the most effective way to prevent attacks. You can also set up your device so that it cannot be discovered.
  • Never accept connection requests with unknown devices.
  • Frequently update your phone’s software. Updates fix vulnerabilities and strengthen your device’s security.
