In the first quarter of 2019 the Banco de España issued 160 requirements for correction of advertising
One of the Banco de España’s less well-known functions is its role in controlling advertising of banking products, to ensure that the information customers receive is clear, sufficient and objective. The Market Conduct and Claims Department reviews advertisements of banking products and reports on the key points to watch, such as, for example, the importance of APR in advertising material.
Thus, in the first quarter of 2019, the Banco de España issued 160 requirements for advertisements that contravened the regulations to be corrected or pulled. This compares with a total of 309 requirements in the whole of 2018.
As we know, advertising has evolved in line with developments in digital media. Nowadays, we receive messages with offers of banking products through a variety of platforms. For this reason, the Banco de España has reinforced its oversight systems to monitor advertising of banking products and services on social media and new communication channels.
A new Banco de España Circular on advertising will shortly reach the public consultation stage. We are updating the regulations to adapt to the changes that have taken place since Circular 6/2010 was published.
