End of period for exchanging pesetas for euro

01/07/2021

Euro coins and notes came into circulation on 1 January 2002. They co-existed with peseta coins and notes until 28 February 2002, when the euro replaced the peseta as legal tender in Spain.

To facilitate the changeover, deadlines were set for people to exchange their pesetas for euro: up to 30 June 2002 at the Banco de España and high-street banks, and subsequently only at the Banco de España. The final deadline for exchanging pesetas for euro was 30 June 2021.

The peseta was legal tender for more than 130 years, a large portion of Spain’s contemporary history. The peseta coins and notes reflect the social and political progress made in that period. Now that the final deadline has lapsed, we wish to give the peseta a well-deserved send-offAbre en ventana nueva.
