The risks of the transfer of our electronic certificate to third parties

09/09/2025

The electronic certificate has become a common tool to identify ourselves to the administration and companies and to sign digitally. Therefore, it is increasingly common that, on certain occasions, we give our certificate to third parties to act on our behalf.

For example, to managers and consultants when we entrust them with administrative, legal and financial management.

Remember that transferring the certificate to third parties carries some risks, such as:

  • That actions be taken on your behalf without your consent.
  • Let them impersonate you.
  • That the security measures of your manager are not as exhaustive as yours and it is easier for a third party to access your credentials and thus increase the risk of improper use of the certificate and the possible loss of sensitive data or cyberattacks.

In the Baco de España we have already detected anomalies in the use of electronic certificates. It is therefore important that we protect our digital identity. Remember that electronic personal identification has the same legal validity as a handwritten signature. Assess the consequences before giving up.
