Collaborating institutions Paying taxes and fines.
28/10/2025
As we’ve mentioned before on this blogAbre en ventana nueva, banks sometimes cooperate with public authorities to help collect taxes, fees, penalties and fines that individuals and firms may be required to pay.
These payments are managed according to the procedures set out by the tax authorities or, in the case of a penalty/fine, by public bodies with sanctioning powers.
It is fairly common for organisations such as the Spanish tax authorities, the Directorate-General for Traffic or local councils to strike agreements with banks so that people can use the various options they offer to make the required payments.
That said, the opening times and services that are available when banks act as the public authorities’ “front desk” may differ from normal opening hours. It is therefore worth checking in advance where and when this type of payment can be made.
It is also important to remember that the banks are only intermediaries in these cases, so if you come across a problem with the administrative procedure, you should contact the relevant tax or sanctioning authority directly.
